Battle of the Trucks: The Ford F-150 vs. RAM 1500

The new Ford F-150 has been America's best-selling truck for many years. The F-150 offers the toughness, reliability, and capabilities that Elkhart truck drivers want. It's also a stylish and attractive truck with classic features and high-end technology. The modern F-150 even provides a comfortable ride and plenty of interior space.

But the legendary F-150 faces some stiff competition. The RAM 1500 is also a solid, well-built truck. Here at Zeigler Ford Lincoln Elkhart, we want our customers to be able to make informed decisions. Here are some comparisons and key differences of the Ford F-150 and RAM 1500:

Size and Body Styles

The Ford F-150 and RAM 1500 are both full-sized pickup trucks. They both share similar sizes and body dimensions. The Ford comes in Regular, Super, and Crew Cab configurations. The Regular has two doors and no back seats. The Super gets small back seats and two extra half-sized doors. The Crew Cab has four full-sized doors and a roomier back row for passengers.

The RAM 1500 also offers similar cab options. The only real difference is that they call their options the Regular, Quad, and Crew Cab. Both trucks offer three different bed lengths. RAM offers lengths of 67-,76- or 96-inches. The Ford has measures of 66-, 78- or 96-inches.

Engine Power and Efficiency

Engine power is a category in which the Ford F-150 shines. Ford gives buyers several different engine options here. The base engine is a 3.3-liter V6. This engine produces around 290 horsepower and has a combined fuel-economy rating of about 20 miles-per-gallon.

At the higher end of the spectrum, Ford offers a 5.0-liter V8 and a turbocharged V6. The V8 produces a whopping 395 horsepower with 400 pounds-feet of torque. It has a fuel-economy rating of 18miles-per-hour. Ford's turbocharged option is found on the F-150 Raptor models. It makes an astounding 450 horses with 510 pounds-feet of torque. Its fuel efficiency is similar to the other models, with a rating of 18 miles-per-gallon.

RAM also has several engine choices for their 1500 models. At the upper end is a powerful, 5.7-liter HEMI V8. This engine cranks out 410 horsepower and 395 pounds-feet of torque. It has a fuel-economy rating of around 19 miles-per-gallon. While these are impressive numbers, they falls hort of what the Ford has to offer with its turbocharged V6.

Capabilities

The capabilities of the Ford F-150 are likely why it remains a top seller. These stats are what truck fans in the Elkhart area will no doubt be the most interested in. These numbers will depend on the model and configuration, but at the higher end, the F-150 has a payload capacity of 2,470 pounds and has a maximum towing capacity of 13,200 pounds.

The RAM 1500 payload capacity tops out at 2,302 pounds and the towing capacity at 7,730 pounds. When it comes to tough work, the Ford wins once again. Both trucks can handle off-road driving, but the RAM can't stand up to the F-150 Raptor models in this category. The Raptor trim package was designed with off-road performance in mind.

Key Features

Both trucks are available in stripped-down work models with simple audio systems and vinyl seats. Both also come in upscale models, with leather upholstery and tons of convenience features. Both offer high-tech infotainment systems with large touchscreen displays and smart-phone connectivity. The newest models of both trucks have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility too.

The standard interior features are very comparable on both trucks. They are also both comfortable and surprisingly quiet on the inside. The safety features and driver-assists are similar on both vehicles as well. Where the Ford F-150 really shows a difference is in performance and power. It offers towing, hauling and off-road performance that the RAM 1500 falls just short of.
